Aims

To increase understanding of conventional CT, cone beam CT, magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound, and their role in maxillofacial dentistry.

To impart confidence in the principles of cross sectional imaging, selection criteria for referral and interpretation of the reports.

Objectives

Explain in brief the physics and techniques of fluoroscopy, CT, MRI, ultrasound and functional techniques such as nuclear medicine.

Demonstrate the differences in imaging appearances between the different modalities.

Discuss the use of alternative modalities to conventional radiography in diagnostic imaging of oro-facial disease.

Learning outcomes

A basic grasp of the physics, advantages and disadvantages of conventional CT, cone beam CT, magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound.

Recognise these modalities in dento-alveolar images.

Appreciate when to request these investigations in dento-alveolar diagnosis.
