Aims

To enable existing educational supervisors to share good practice, discuss and reflect on Assessing the Learner and Guidance for Personal and Professional Development elements of the COPDEND Standards

Objectives

· Discuss, with dental colleagues, aspects of the revised COPDEND Standards for Dental Educators(2013)

· Reflect on their experiences of assessment in practice and Identify best practice in assessment by:

o Case Based Discussion (CBD)

o Direct Observation of Practice (DOPs)

o Patient Assessment Questionnaire (PAQ)

· Consider principles of effective and constructive feedback and role play giving feedback

· Discuss the principles of constructing a meaningful Personal and Professional Development Plan (PDP)

· Explore the role of reflection in assessment of others and development of self

Learning outcomes

· Reflect on the Domain 2 (Assessment) and Domain 3 (Guidance for PPD)in the COPDEND Standards and identify further personal development needs

· Identify additional ways they can enhance their practice when assessing and giving feedback to learners

· Ensure that all members of the dental team, including themselves, have a meaningful PDP

· Assess the quality of their own and others’ reflection on practice
