Aims

To enable existing educational supervisors to share good practice, discuss and reflect on the Teaching and Learning and Management elements of the COPDEND Standards

Objectives

· Discuss, with dental colleagues, aspects of the revised COPDEND Standards for Dental Educators(2013)

· Reflect on their clinical setting and discuss with others how the setting can be enhanced to better contribute to learning

· Identify further activities or resources that would enrich the practice setting as a learning environment

· Identify activities that can build a cohesive and supportive Dental Team

· Consider the influence of the team in the effective induction of the learner

Learning outcomes

· Disseminate information about the COPDEND Standards for Dental Educators (2013) with colleagues in their workplace and discuss with them the implications of undertaking an educational supervisor role for the practice as a whole, (for example potential changes to patient booking times, or any required environmental changes to enhance opportunities for direct observation or confidential discussion with supervisees).

· Begin completion of the Portfolio for Educational Supervisors, and plan their time to include opportunities for educational practice, study and reflection

· Identify local resources which may support their further development into the role of educational supervisor

· Discuss with the Dental Team the factors that enhance the learning environment such as practice culture, organisation and resources

· Identify two improvements that could be made to their practice setting to increase its potential as a learning environment

· Identify two changes which can be made to enhance the dental team in their practice

· Reflect on the Teaching and Learning Domain and the Management domain in the COPDEND Standards and identify further personal development needs
