Aims

The aim of this course is to educate delegates in the principles of First Aid and medical emergencies including:

  • Basic life support Adult, Child & AED
  • Airway Management & use of oxygen
  • Control of bleeding
  • Fractures
  • Causes of unconsciousness
  • Treatment of burns & scalds
  • Major /minor illnesses & the use of emergency drugs & IM injection technique
  • Risk assessments
  • Use of emergency equipment within practice

Once trained, successful candidates will be deemed competent to carry out the duties of an Emergency First Aider at work in a dental practice known as "the appointed person" for the purposes of the Health & Safety (First Aid) regulations 1981.

In addition, this course will also cover the use of emergency drugs and emergency equipment available in the dental practice.

Objectives

Once competence has been assessed and this qualification awarded, the candidate will:

  • Demonstrate all the skills to properly assess/diagnose major conditions & injuries
  • Demonstrate in a simulated environment treatment of a casualty with various medical conditions/emergencies & give appropriate treatment within the parameters of their knowledge & training until more skilled personnel assume responsibility
  • Demonstrate team/scene management skills
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of appropriate drug use for medical emergencies
  • Demonstrate safe & effective use of emergency resuscitation equipment
