Aims

To provide Dental Hygiene/Therapists with the knowledge and skills required to perform safe inhalation sedation in practice

Learning outcomes
  • Discuss behavioural/non-pharmacological management techniques
  • Understand the process of patient assessment for IHS
  • Describe the cardiovascular and respiratory physiology and anatomy relevant to inhalation sedation
  • Explain the indications and contraindications to inhalation sedation
  • Understand the principles of patient monitoring during IHS
  • Set up an IHS machine and perform a check sequence
  • Safely use a IHS machine, titrating the nitrous oxide concentration against the patients response to ensure the safe conscious sedation of a patient
  • Recognition and manage potential complications of IHS
  • Understand the principles of safe recovery and discharge following sedation
  • Discuss the medico legal aspects of the provision of IHS (e.g. GDC regulations, consent, patient instructions)
