Aims

Interactive session to provide clinical intervention to a deteriorating patient using a systematic approach DR ABCDE & SAMPLE assessment tool.

Objectives
  • Observe physical signs of illness, physical features of a patient which can indicate the event happening in front of you is genuine.
  • Use the systematic approach DR ABCDE & SAMPLE assessment tool to identify patient presenting complaint.
  • Effectively use 7 principles of patient management to assist decision making in an emergency.
  • Demonstrate the use of flowcharts for each presenting medical emergency.
  • Discuss what intervention is required for each emergency and use of appropriate equipment.
Learning outcomes

By the end of this session, participants will be able to apply the DR ABCDE approach and the seven principles of patient management to assess and manage medical emergencies, effectively utilise emergency flowcharts as decision-support tools, and identify the appropriate drugs and equipment required for common medical emergency presentations in the dental setting.
