Aims

Work collaboratively as a team to aid victims with medical emergencies working within the boundaries of practice. To be confident and competent in recognising cardiac arrest and to respond to any life threating illness which present in dental practice

Objectives

To use a systematic approach to DR ABCDE and SAMPLE assessment tool to identify a ‘poorly’ person using the 7 principles of patient management. Identify and manage a deteriorating patient using the above system. Utilise this decision-making tool to effectively prioritise patients and perform lifesaving intervention when required. Provide CPR to a patient in cardiac arrest and secure an airway using manual techniques and airway adjuncts.

Learning outcomes

Demonstrate efficient use of DR ABCDE and SAMPLE assessment tools to identify the cause of illness. Provide treatment when indicated and administer practice medical emergency drugs to improve or stabilise the poorly patient.

Competently demonstrate 2 minutes of affective CPR and safe use of an AED.

Know when to call 999/112 and when to update the emergency services if the patient's condition deteriorates or improves.
