Aims

To provide dental therapists and hygienists with the knowledge and skills to make safe and effective referrals using the electronic referral system, ensuring best practice, accurate documentation, and alignment with GDC professional standards.

Objectives
  • Explain referral pathways
  • Recognise when a referral to secondary care is appropriate and when internal referral to a GDP may be more suitable.
  • Navigate the electronic referral system
  1. successfully log in, access the dashboard, and select the correct referral form.
  2. Complete referral documentation accurately
  3. Enter patient details (manual and NHS Spine lookup), complete medical history forms, and ensure all relevant sections are filled.
  4. Upload and attach supporting information
  5. Add radiographs, clinical images, and relevant documents in line with referral requirements.
  6. Submit and manage referrals appropriately
  7. Distinguish between draft, grey, and red submission options, and understand the process if a referral is returned.
  • Apply GDC Standards in referral practice
  • Demonstrate professionalism, clear communication, and appropriate record-keeping to support patient care.
