DescriptionThis course aims to give contemporary guidance on the delivery of dental treatment under general anaesthesia for children. As well as briefly reviewing the history of the use of general anaesthesia in children’s dentistry, the course will focus on standards, which should be met to ensure safe and effective care. The role of the anaesthetist and some of the challenges commonly encountered by dentists in the planning and providing this type of dental treatment will also be explored.

Aims

This course aims to review:

  • The prevalence and effects of dental disease (caries) in young children
  • The history and evolution of GA use in children’s dentistry
  • When and why GA might be needed for dental treatment
  • The current provision of dental GA services for children in England and current standards for these services
  • Planning dental treatment under GA
  • What are the features of ‘good’ dental care under GA and how might we measure outcome
  • The anaesthetic challenges of working with anxious children and with a shared airway
Objectives

By the end of this course delegates will:

  • Have an understanding of the dental needs of the child population and the reasons for considering use of GA for children’s dentistry
  • How dental GA services for children have evolved and improved over the last century
  • Have a understanding of the standards which should be met by such services
  • Have an insight into some of the key the principles of treatment planning when GA is considered for dental treatment
  • Have an insight into how good care and outcome might be measured
  • Have an insight into the special anaesthetic considerations, which arise from the anaesthetist’s point of view and how the anaesthetic and dental team work together to provide safe, effective care.
