DescriptionThis is a Northern universities consortium day which we host every other year here at sheffield- we deal with complex discussions of multidisciplinary nature and consenting issues in relation to Orthodontic treatment. We focus on risks and benefits of treatment, we normally host a defence specialist who discusses professionalism in the workplace and thorough note and documentation of treament Break out rooms enable 2 additional learning style 1) OSCE with questions on 15 sheets with candidates given blank answer sheets to complete- with immediate feedback after 1 hour of assessment 2) we have a series of Case base discussions- related to complex mid treatment decisions (transferring care) this is good learning for our attendees as they rarely see mid treatment transfers and we discuss how to establish progress and making the next steps.

Aims

Improve the understanding of risks and benefits of orthodontic treatment and the evidence associated with this.- using lecture, small group and OSCE style teaching.

Objectives
  • To establish and improve consenting for patients undergoing orthodontic treatment.
  • Understanding and gaining knowledge on complex transfer care of patients mid treatment- together with diagnosing issues which may arise mid treatment as seen on OSCE- small group teaching covers 6 patient journeys with one teacher to 6 enabling discussion and input from all trainees. Management of dental trauma in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment is also discussed
Learning outcomes
  • Improve confidence in management of transfer cases into your care.
  • Ensure detailed, evidenced consent process for starting and continuing patient care. Update knowledge on dealing with complex dental traumatic injuries to orthodontic patients mid treatment and prior to treatment
  • Feel able to assess difficulties in orthodontic treatment and make logical decisions to take patient treatment forwards.
