Aims

To provide an update on the ionising radiation regulations IRR17 & IRMER17, To highlight key changes in ‘Guidance Notes for Dental Practitioners on the Safe Use of X-ray Equipment’ (2020)

Objectives
  • To review principles of radiation physics
  • To highlight the risks of ionising radiation and the principles of radiation protection and dose reduction in dental radiography
  • To reinforce the statutory responsibilities of dental practitioners
Learning outcomes
  • Apply radiation protection principles to the daily practice of dental radiography
  • Understand how to fulfil their statutory requirements
  • Ensure that radiation doses are optimised, and that radiography quality assurance programmes, and selection criteria, are fit for purpose.
