Aims

To enhance understanding of the social, clinical, and systemic factors contributing to health inequalities among children and young people with disabilities, and to highlight the role of the dental team in addressing these disparities through advocacy and inclusive practice.

Objectives
  • To explore the evidence base surrounding health and oral health inequalities affecting children and young people with disabilities.
  • To examine key NHS and BSPD initiatives aimed at reducing inequalities and improving access to care.
  • To consider practical ways the dental team can contribute to reducing inequities through education, advocacy, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
Learning outcomes
  • Describe the social and commercial determinants of health influencing outcomes for children with disabilities.
  • Recognise how national policy frameworks (e.g. Marmot Review, NHS Long Term Plan, Core20PLUS5) relate to paediatric dental practice.
  • Identify actions that the dental team can take locally to advocate for and deliver equitable, inclusive care.
