DescriptionThe purpose of the course is to train dentists, dental therapists, hygienists and dental nurses to be able to deliver inhalation sedation (IHS) to children and adults in a safe and effective manner in line with national guidelines and protocols. The day will incorporate an assessment of: a) MCQ of knowledge b) A practical assessment including equipment assembly, safety checks and titration of IHS
Additional information
  • Certification for independent practice using IHS is not the responsibility of NHSE and hence cannot be provided
  • Delegates MUST have an STAC accredited supervisor in order to complete their supervised cases.
  • Completion of the course alone will not enable the delegate to undertake IHS independently.

Aims

To equip the dental team with the knowledge and skills needed to safely provide inhalation sedation (IHS) for both children and adults in dental care.

Objectives

Aligned with the relevant IACSD syllabus, the course covers knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviours, including:

  • Knowledge & Critical Understanding - Develop a deep understanding of key concepts and evidence-based practice.
  • Practical Skills - Gain hands-on experience and competence in essential clinical techniques.
  • Personal Attitude & Professionalism - Foster appropriate professional behaviours, ethical practice, and reflective learning.
Learning outcomes
  • Explain the historical development and theoretical foundations of nitrous oxide use in inhalation sedation, including relevant physiology and pharmacology. 
  • Demonstrate practical skills in administering nitrous oxide, including equipment checks, patient monitoring, and management of potential complications.
  • Summarise current sedation guidelines and apply principles of clinical governance to the use of nitrous oxide sedation.
