Description: As dental professionals, we have preventive conversations with parents of young children every day. From our own experiences and clinical research, these conversations can be complex and challenging. This is especially true when parents are resistant to the advice we offer. With COVID 19 pandemic, these conversations are often held remotely. The first three sessions will be delivered as 90 minute webinars. During the webinars you will learn the theory of communication skills and behaviour change to help structure effective behaviour change conversations. The sessions will include short presentations given by researchers from the University of Leeds, Paediatric Dental department as well as interactive activities and group discussions. Session four will be a small group interactive workshop with the researchers and professional actors. Utilising the theory from the previous sessions, you will be supported to practice your skills and explore the methods of structured behaviour change conversations. The methods explored will apply to conversations that take place both in the surgery and remotely. You will also practice different approaches for parents who are resistant to the oral health messages. This is a fun and interactive session and an excellent opportunity to practice your skills confidently with your peers and the research team. There will then be an extra session after a few months to discuss how you have been getting on practicing your new skills.
