Aims

To understand how dental service are commissioned in the UK and how this impacts speciality trainees, specialists and consultants

Objectives

1st session:

  • To understand commissioning of specialist dental services in secondary care
  • To describe structure of the NHS in the UK
  • To explain funding and commissioning of dental services, including primary, secondary and tertiary dental services
  • To understand different forms of commissioning and payment including payment by results, block contracts and units of dental activity
  • To advise how the quality of dental services is monitored and maintained

2nd session:

  • To advise regarding the future of dental services commissioning including primary care contracts and commissioning guides for different specialities
  • To discuss how specialist training may be affected by commissioning and how workforce planning is incorporated into commissioning
  • To give an overview of the development of commissioning guides for different specialities

3rd session:

To describe the role of the GDC in regulation of dental care professionals

To engage with the GDC in how the quality of specialists, dentists with enhanced skills and dental care professionals can be assured

To be updated with regards to current consultations and work within the GDC to ensure high quality care throughout dentistry

4th session:

  • To discuss activity monitoring and tariffs for dental treatment
  • To explain the process of service development within secondary care
  • To understand networks with primary care services, LDNs and MCNs and referral systems

5th session:

  • To explain the roles of MCNs
  • To describe how Managed Clinical Networks can be set up and how they can work with commissioners and the LDN to provide appropriate services for local populations
  • To analyse the extent to which the MCN has been effective by focussing on one area, that of domiciliary care provision and the lessons learned
Learning outcomes

By the end of the conference delegates should be able to:

  • Explain how dental services and particularly specialist dental services are commissioned within the UK and how this may change in the future
  • Participate in managed clinical networks and work with other bodies to ensure quality assurance for specialist dental services
  • Describe the stages and write a business case or tender for specialist dental services within primary, secondary or tertiary care.
