He has spoken nationally on this subject and links the underlying theory to the practicalities of implementing a sound decontamination policy. Paul initially trained as a mechanical, electrical and HTM test engineer for thermal/chemical washer disinfectors and healthcare/pharmaceutical sterilizers

Dr Caroline Pankhurst is a dentist and Specialist in Oral Microbiology and has published extensively in the fields of oral medicine, oral microbiology, and dental unit waterlines including two books on infection control namely “Control of Infection Guidelines for General Dental Practice” & “Basic Guide to Prevention and Infection Control in Dentistry”

Aims

To discuss how the legal regulations and guidelines inter-relate with practical solutions for infection control and decontamination in dental practice

Objectives

By the end of the course the delegates should have knowledge and understanding of:

  • The effective use of barrier protection, immunisation protocols, sharps management and post exposure prophylaxis
  • Management of dental unit waterlines
  • Relevant legislation on waste management and waste segregation
  • List the current ‘essential requirements’ guidance given in HTM 01-05
  • Understand the importance of using thermal instrument washer disinfectors and ultrasonic baths
  • Describe the best practice advice for manual cleaning of reusable medical devices
  • List the differences between the three sterilizer types of B, S and N
  • Identify the decontamination factors to consider when selecting instruments i.e. hand pieces
  • Identifying the appropriate water qualities required for both instrument washer disinfectors and sterilizers
  • To understand and undertake the principles and practice of continual improvement
  • To gain an understanding of the necessary testing requirements of all decontamination equipment
  • To understand KPI’s, IPS audit tool, inspection, risk assessment and SOP’s
