Aims

1) To recognise the importance of a comprehensive pre-treatment medical history.

2) To describe some top tips for successful minor oral surgery in general practice.

3) To describe the common complications in minor oral surgery and provide information on how to manage them.

4) To recognise the problems presented by new generation oral anticoagulants and bisphosphonates.

5) To  be able to diagnose and have strategies for the 'high risk' third molar.

Objectives

1) To realise the importance of a comprehensive medical history.

2) To realise the potential problems presented by new generation anti-coagulants and bisphosphonates

3) To pre-empt and realise when complications may arise and what to do subsequently.

4) To be able to identify and realise the differing strategies for the treatment of ' high risk' third molars  

Learning outcomes

1) To be better able to assess a patients medical history.

2) To be able to have a strategy in mind for a difficult extraction or unforeseen complication.

3) To realise the new significance of bisphosphonates and new oral anti-coagulants.
