DescriptionA hands on training day aimed at dental nurses and orthodontic therapists, to disclose plaque, record the results, give appropriate oral health advise and apply topical fluoride varnish to patients teeth.Recommended reading prior to the course Delivering Better Oral Health 3rd edition (Public Health England ) Improving Oral Health Changing Behaviour (Department of Health) Basic Guide to Oral Health Education and Promotion - Felton & Chapman (2013) We reccomend that delegates have at least 6 months registration with the GDC prior to applying for this course. The second part of the course will be an Observed Clinical Structured Examination (OSCE) on 9th May 2014 it is important that delegates are able to attend this day also. Delegates will be issued with a log book in which to record 10 patient events

Aims

To provide the practical and theorectical knowledge and skills needed in order for delegates to competently use disclosing materials, record the outcome, and competently aply topical fluoride varnish and provide appropriate oral health advice

Objectives

Delegates will be able to competently complete the following on prescription from a dental surgeon

Check medical history,

prepare the surgery for the procedure,

prepare the patient,

Be competent and demonstrate a safe technique during the practical elements of disclosing plaque and applying topical fluoride varnish

Demonstrate an understanding of the results of the plaque score and be able to provide appropriate toothbrushing instruction and oral health advice

Be able to manage any complications that may occur

Ensure continuity of care for the patient
