DescriptionThe aim of this course is to develop the learners’ ability to recognise, assess and manage medical emergencies in the primary care dental setting (adults and paediatrics), so as to deal quickly with uncommon but potentially tragic events. This theory course meets the annual GDC requirements for CPD in medical emergencies and follows the UK Resuscitation Council guidelines in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Immediate Life Support (ILS).

3. To outline the emergency drugs and equipment that should be held by dental surgeries, and their uses

5. To outline procedures to minimise the risk of medical emergencies in the primary care dental setting
This course is suitable for the entire practice team.

- Mark Richardson has been nursing for over 20 years, originally working at the Surrey County Hospital as a Health Care Assistant. He left to study at Southampton University, and qualified as a nurse in 1998. He worked in cardiology and then vascular surgery when he qualified, consolidating his training over an 18 month period. He then worked in the Cardiothoracic and General intensive Care units in Southampton, where he stayed for the next 9 years. He was promoted to Charge Nurse in 2004, and continued in this position until he left Southampton in 2009. He started work at the Emergency Department in Winchester after leaving ICU, and was again promoted to Charge Nurse in 2011. He started working in the resuscitation department at HHFT in 2012, and was promoted to Lead for the service in 2013. As well as being an Advanced Life Support instructor, he is currently studying through the Open University in conjunction with the NHS Leadership Academy for a post graduate diploma in Healthcare Leadership.
