SubjectCADSIM
DescriptionThis regional cadaveric simulation (CADSIM) course is designed for plastic surgery trainees to develop a strong, practical understanding of the anatomy and surgical techniques required for lymph node dissection in melanoma and skin cancer surgery. Following changes in melanoma management, completion lymph node dissection is no longer routinely performed for patients with a positive sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB), with many patients now managed with immunotherapy. As a result, trainees are exposed to fewer lymphadenectomy procedures during training, and those encountered are often more complex, typically performed for patients with clinically palpable or advanced nodal disease. This course aims to address this training gap by providing high quality hands-on cadaveric simulation covering the full spectrum of lymphadenectomy procedures, delivered by experienced consultant plastic surgeons in a supportive, small-group teaching environment.

Objectives

Course Content

The course will provide structured teaching and supervised cadaveric dissection of:

Neck dissection and parotidectomy

Axillary lymph node dissection

Groin (inguinal) lymphadenectomy

Pelvic lymph node dissection

Teaching will focus on relevant anatomy, step-by-step operative technique, surgical tips and strategies to minimise complications.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

Describe the indications for lymphadenectomy in skin cancer management

Demonstrate a clear understanding of the relevant surgical anatomy for lymph node dissection of the neck, parotid, axilla, groin and pelvis

Perform the key steps of lymph node dissection procedures in a simulated cadaveric setting

Apply safe operative principles and techniques to minimise morbidity and complications

Increase confidence in assisting with and performing lymphadenectomy procedures in clinical practice
