DescriptionA one day course at the University of Leeds, Anatomy department where the trainees will perform surgical procedures on Thiel cadavers with consultant faculty and supervision. The course will include a mixture of theory and practical sessions.

Please read the dissection room regulations prior to attending the course. You will be asked to sign that you have read the regulations on the day at registration.

The course Director is Mr Paul Cowling, Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultant Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust.

The course is free for Yorkshire and Humber Trainees. Priority will be given to regional trainees. Please make sure you meet the correct grade criteria for each speciality before booking your place. (See course description)

Surgical gowns, over shoes, facemasks and gloves are provided for the lab. If you wish to wear theatre blues please bring your own.

Aims

To gain hand-on experience of common orthopaedic presentations, methods of fixation and surgical approaches for Core Surgical Orthopaedic training.

Objectives

· Introduce and consolidate hip approaches required for hemiarthroplasty and Dynamic Hip Screw fixation.

· Introduce and consolidate upper limb approaches for plating forearm fractures and wrist fractures.

· Recognition of compartment syndrome of the forearm, and the surgical approach for release of compartments.

· Understand methods of ankle fracture fixation, when they are appropriate, and the basics of performing the procedure.

· Introduce and consolidate approaches to ankle medial and lateral malleolus.

· Recognition of compartment syndrome of the lower leg, and the surgical approach for release of all compartments.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the day we hope all participants will have gained knowledge of the common approaches and associated anatomy for Core Surgical trainees involved in orthopaedic training.

We hope participants will have gained confidence in the diagnosis of compartment syndrome, and the surgical approach to decompression.
