Description | The Dental Medical Emergencies (DME) Programme offers a hybrid approach to the development and demonstration of DME skills and knowledge. Candidates will undertake an active learning online programme designed to support candidate to move theory to practice. Once completed, candidates will have the opportunity to move theory to practice within a supportive, high fidelity simulation suite. |
Additional information | The Dental Acute Illness Management (DentAIM) HEE DFTs online programme (via Athena) provides core DME theory modules, which must be completed before the 6th September 2025. It is anticipated that this will take approximately four hours to complete. Candidates who do not successfully complete the DentAIM online programme by the stipulated due date will not be permitted to continue to on the course. Candidates will be provided with an opportunity to create a New Account on Athena. |

Aims | To provide the skills and knowledge required to effectively manage medical emergencies in the dental setting. |
Objectives | By the end of the session following your preparation and subsequent reflection, you should be able: · To demonstrate, in simulation, Basic Life Support procedures including AED use. · To demonstrate, in simulation, appropriate assessment and management of a choking patient. · To demonstrate, in simulation, application of a systematic ABCDE assessment of the acutely unwell person. · To analyse ABCDE assessment findings and apply them to inform decision-making. · To apply condition-specific best practice guidance to simulated scenario to agree an informed management plan for the acutely unwell person. · To demonstrate safe administration of condition-specific medications. · To evaluate personal performance in simulation through audio-visual and facilitator feedback, to plan the next steps for individual professional development. · To be able to make an informed assessment of the arrangements for management of the acutely unwell person in the dental setting(s) where you work. |
