Aims

Aim is to present an overview of medical conditions that affect children and discuss the impact of general health on both oral health and dental management. Followed by a basic refresher on Clinical Governance in relation to Paediatric Dentistry, and give an update of the current Paediatric Dentistry workforce and how it might be developed in the future, especially in the context of working as an extended dental team.

Objectives

To train Level 2 practitioners to safely provide dental care to patients with medical conditions

Further knowledge of the roles of a consultant, specialist, tier 2 and primary care practitioner in the delivery of specialist paediatric dental care

Identify areas where audit and quality improvement projects would be of benefit

Increase knowledge of current workforce challenges and opportunities

gain an insight into future specialist workforce development

Learning outcomes

Demonstrate increased knowledge of common medical conditions in childhood.

Efficiently correspond with other healthcare professionals to ensure Paediatric patients have dental care provided in the optimal setting and with necessary precautions.

Discuss dental treatment plans for patients with common childhood medical conditions and their associated oral consequences.

Reflect on the link between common medical conditions and oral diseases including oral medicine conditions.

Improve oral health of children with medical conditions.

Understand how specialist Paediatric Dentistry teams and Networks currently operate

Have insight into potential future development of specialist Paediatric Dentistry teams and Networks

Have up to date knowledge of clinical governance processes and structures in relation to specialist dental services and be able to carry out and lead clinical governance projects within their services.
