The Care Quality Commission carry out assessments of the quality of primary care dental services leading to a judgment about whether they provide people with safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led care, based on whether the regulations are being met.

This course is suitable for the Multi-professional Team, Foundation Programme Directors, Foundation Quality Assurance Inspectors, Foundation Dentist Trainers, Foundation Dentists and their Multi-professional Support Team.

This course is aimed at raising standards and improving patient care by gaining a better understanding of best practice in clinical audit, risk assessment and infection control.

2 hours of CPD will be achieved for each topic.

Aims

This is an interactive course with the aim of better understanding of best practice in clinical audit, risk assessment and infection control.

Objectives

Objectives for understanding audits and covers such subjects as:

  • Dental Conscious Sedation; IPS infection control tool; Radiography; Patient Records; Implantology; BPE scores; Orthodontics

Objectives for best practice in risk assessment:

  • Gain insight as to where and when a Risk Assessment should be implemented in a dental practice giving due regard to the current regulatory framework.
  • Understand what a risk assessment is and who is responsible for ensuring an assessment is in place.
  • To introduce the integration of risk assessments in to the dental team and within your own work place.
  • To give some examples of risk assessments including COSHH.
  • To understand how to manage risks associated with legionella.

Objectives for infection control:

  • Discuss how decontamination equipment are kept in accordance with current legislation and guidance such as, The Health and Social Care Act 2008 Code of Practice on the prevention and control of infections and related guidance, HTM 01-05 and HTM 04-01, National Patient safety Agency (NPSA) guidance and safe sharps directive to keep people safe. 

  • Explore how the requirement of relevant legislation to ensure that premises and equipment are properly purchased, used and maintained such as, Ionising Radiation Regulations 1999 and Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2000 (IRMER), Sharps regulations 2013, HTM 07-01 (healthcare waste). 

  • Explain appropriate arrangements for managing medicines which include obtaining, prescribing, recording, handling, storage and security, dispending safe administration and disposal.
