Description | To provide an update on the knowledge and practical skills required to ensure the safe and effective administration of dental Local Anaesthesia (LA) including inferior dental blocks. The course is presented as a series of short presentations in the morning followed by practical/hands on session in the afternoon. | ||

Aims | This course aims to provide registered Hygienists, Therapists and PLVE applicants with a refreher of dental anatomy, management of the anxious patient and awareness of complications associated with anaesthetic. Medico-legal considerations are highlighted throughout the day. | ||
Objectives | an awareness of the law/regulations and consent regarding the administration of local anaesthesia · demonstrate an understanding of the related anatomy · select the appropriate armamentarium · understand the indications and contraindications to the use of local anaesthesia · demonstrate management of pain and anxiety with non pharmacological techniques · demonstrate different local anaesthetic administrative techniques · recognise the associated complications · understand the reasons for failure · give appropriate post operative advice | ||
Learning outcomes | Be familiar with a the oral landmarks and innervation in relation to oral anatomy Be familiar with the soft tissues related to local analgesia Be able safely to assemble a range of equipment for a variety of local anaesthetic procedures Be able safely to dismantle and dispose of local anaesthetic equipment. Be familiar with the Dentsply safety plus system and the double click safety approach. Be familiar with a sharps injury policy Have practised administration local anaesthetic in the clinical skills laboratory | ||
