Aims

The aims of the discussion on 2’ cleft lip and palate will be

1) an understanding of the diagnosis, classification, and aetiology of cleft lip and palate.

2) recognizing the importance of the multidisciplinary team and team work, as well as the role of the dentist in the cleft patient’s management

3) an understanding of what is meant by 2’ cleft surgery for management of facial deformity ( maxillary hypoplasia ), nasal deformity, the cleft alveolus and speech / hearing problems. How to refer on their patients for help

Objectives

The objectives of the lecture / discussion are

1 to enhance the delegates understanding of cleft lip and palate in a ‘holistic’ and ‘team’ approach

2 To allow the delegates see and experience what is possible for patients with a cleft lip and palate, using clinical pictures and diagrams to explain the important anatomical, embryological, developemental, physiological, orofacial, and dental principles of care

3 To enable the delegates to understand their role in the dental / hygiene care of these very deserving patients

4 To help them to learn / experience other aspects of dentistry , facial form and function, that will actively encourage them to seek ‘further learning’ in all aspects of the pro-facial- dental complex
