Aims

Dental Emergencies - To develop an understanding of the types of dental emergencies common in General Dental Practice and the management of these emergencies.

Objectives

Dental Emergencies - To understand the types of dental emergencies that present in GDP. To be able to manage these dental emergencies. To be able to assess referral/follow up requirements. To understand the role of pharmacology in the management of some dental emergencies To be able to write an appropriate prescription where necessary.

Prescribing:- To familiarise the BNF

To understand good practice in prescribing

To be able to write a prescription accurately

Prescribing fluoride to support D.B.O.H.

To understand the role of pharmacy in treating:

Bacterial infections / Fungal infections / Viral infections

To have knowledge of common drug interactions

To be able to advice patients on and prescribe for pain relief

Learning outcomes

To understand the role of pharmacy in the treatment of dry mouth and anxiety
