DescriptionThis 3 day course is designed to provide the theoretical knowledge for Dental Nurses to confidently deliver oral health messages and apply topical fluoride varnish to adults and children on prescription from a Dentist. In addition, the course aims to ensure dental nurses are ready to support patients and the dental team when the new prevention led NHS contract is implemented. **Please see attached for additional Course description**

Attendance at all 3 educational days is mandatory unless prior accreditation has been awarded.

Accreditation of Prior Learning [APL]

Individuals that have achieved competency in either Oral Health Promotion or Topical Fluoride Application within a timeframe of 2 years may be awarded academic credit and will be allowed to reduce the duration of the course. Individuals will be required to provide a copy of their Certificate and details of how the competency is maintained in a clinical setting [e.g. statement from GDC Registrant]. The tutors will consider every APL on an individual basis.

Prior reading of the document Delivering Better Oral Health is required, and delegates are advised to download and print a copy of the document for their personal use throughout the course. Available at:

This extended duty competency course is run by the Yorkshire & Humber Health Education England Tutors who are occupationally competent and Further and Higher education tutors

This course is mapped to the COPDEND Standards for Dental Educators 2013 and the General Dental Council Standards for Education (2015).

This course is designed to give Dental Nurses the skills and knowledge required by dental nurses working in primary general dental practices to apply fluoride varnish products as prescribed by appropriately registered practitioners for individualised oral health care plans.

This course is intended to address skills and knowledge appropriate for health workers whose work roles may require the application of fluoride varnish and the giving of oral health advice to a range of patients in accordance with relevant legislative and regulatory requirements which follows the General Dental Councils Scope of Practice as an extended duty for dental nurses.

Aims

Dental nurses provide a key role in oral health education and support prevention in primary care. This course will enable dental nurses to structure oral health sessions and deliver evidence based oral health key messages to patients to improve and promote better oral health.

Additionally, the course will provide the theoretical knowledge and the practical skills (achieved through a work-based reflective logbook under the supervision of a GDC registered clinical mentor) required for the delegate to competently apply topical fluoride to children and adult patients on the prescription from a dentist.

Objectives

By the end of the course the delegate will be able to;

  • Deliver key OH messages to all patient groups
  • Recognise the importance of good communication skills to help patients achieve a positive change in behaviour
  • Evaluate patient OH sessions to enable structure and learning
  • Explain the aetiology of dental caries and describe the mechanisms of fluoride in caries prevention
  • Describe GDC ‘Standards for the Dental Team’ and relate it to their role in patient care
  • Exhibit knowledge and understanding of the process and procedure of topical fluoride application through the work-based reflective logbook
  • Demonstrate competence in the procedure of topical fluoride application for adults and children, achieved through direct observation from the work-based Mentor
  • Complete any written work as directed by the course Tutors and complete the work-based reflective logbook containing 10 case studies prior to the third course session.
  • Create and evaluate a workplace display relating to oral health.
