DescriptionThis course has been revised from the original Certificate of Competency. It will now only provide theory and knowledge that is required to accurately measure and record plaque indices. It is appropriate for Dental Nurses and Orthodontic Therapists who wish to undertake this additional duty under the General Dental Council’s (GDC) Scope of Practice and is relevant to Hygienists and Therapists as an update.

Aims

This course is designed to enable the learner to develop the knowledge required to accurately measure and record plaque indices, working to the prescription of a Dentist. It is appropriate for Dental Nurses and Orthodontic Therapists who wish to undertake this additional duty under the General Dental Council’s (GDC) Scope of Practice; however it may also be suitable for Dental Hygienists and Dental Therapists for the purposes of continued professional development.

Objectives

The objective is to explain and discuss:

  • Purpose of measuring and recording plaque indices in relation to oral health assessment; patient motivation and oral health education.
  • Legislation and professional guidance that relates to the process of measuring and recording plaque indices.
  • Measure and record plaque indices accurately in a virtual classroom and understand how to communicate findings and oral hygiene instruction to a patient.
  • Evaluate own skills in measuring and recording plaque indices and identify areas for self-development.
Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course the learner will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose of measuring and recording plaque indices in relation to oral health assessment; patient motivation and oral health education.
