It will focus on providing a basic understanding of the fundamentals of occlusion, appropriate orthodontic assessment, the paediatric-orthodontic interface and timely referrals for orthodontic assessment.

Aims

To provide delegates with an understanding of orthodontic assessment and treatment and its overlap with paediatric dentistry, with particular focus on features and age-groups to look out for to aid appropriate referrals.

Objectives
  • Explain malocclusion, orthodontic classifications, and orthodontic assessments.
  • Describe the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need, the pathways for orthodontic treatment and referral timings.
  • To discuss the relevance of paediatric dentistry in orthodontics.
Learning outcomes

On completion of this course delegates will be able to:

  • Understand basic aspects of orthodontic assessment and diagnosis, including when to consider referral.
  • Use the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need and understand its relevance to NHS orthodontic treatment.
  • Appreciate the importance of paediatric dentistry in orthodontics.
