Aims

To cover issues relating to consent and communication within special care dentistry including the mental capacity act, equality act and reasonable adjustments

Objectives
  • To review principles relating to consent of the special care patient in particular relating to the mental capacity act, equality act and the concept of reasonable adjustment
  • To discuss the barriers faced when accessing care
  • To discuss communication within special care dentistry, especially those with significant communication difficulties (including BSL, Makaton)
Learning outcomes
  • Apply the principles of legislation including Mental Capacity Act and Equality Act to gain informed consent for treatment provided to those with additional needs
  • Identify methods to aid communication for those with communication difficulties such as BSL or Makaton 
  • Demonstrate being able to work with families and carers to help with the consent process if applicable
