DescriptionThis training course is only available for GDC registered dental nurses who are involved in the Flexible Commissioning prevention programme. There are 4 successive training sessions for this programme delivering knowledge and theory. Clinical competency is achieved in the workplace with an occupationally competent supervisor (such as Dentist or Hygiene Therapist) who agrees to support the dental nurse in clinical areas of training. Additional information

Attendees must be GDC dental nurse registrants.

Must have a digital device with camera and audio.

Must be able to allocate a workplace mentor to complete competencies.

MANDATORY TO ATTEND ALL 4 SESSIONS

Aims

An online training course providing dental nurses with knowledge and understanding to support the Flexible Commissioning prevention programme in primary care.

Objectives

This training programme will:

  • Discuss the role of the dental nurse as the flexible commissioning champion.
  • Explain theory and rationale for measuring and recording plaque including effective plaque removal techniques.
  • Examine the mechanism of fluoride and describe methods of safe application of varnish to support a prevention programme.
  • Recognise effective behaviour management techniques and conduct behaviour change conversations.
Learning outcomes

By the end of the training programme you will be able to:

  • Apply knowledge, understanding and skills to communicate effective oral health messages and targeted prevention for diverse patient groups.
  • Summarise how to measure and record bacterial plaque.
  • Define how to safely apply fluoride varnish.
