DescriptionA one day course to train GDC registered dental hygienists and/or dental therapists, employed by dental practices who hold an NHS contract with Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB), on patient group direction for the administration of Colgate (R) Duraphat (R) Varnish 50mg/ml Dental Suspension 2.26% (22600ppm) Sodium Fluoride. The use of this PGD is for the prevention of dental caries in adults and children aged 3 years or above, either attending the dental practice for routine treatment OR presenting within community settings of schools and care homes.

Aims

To equip participants with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to competently prescribe and administer Colgate® Duraphat® Varnish 50mg/ml Dental Suspension 2.26% (22,600ppm) Sodium Fluoride using the approved Humber North Yorkshire PGD.

Objectives

Understand the concept of a PGD, including its application in clinical practice.

Discuss the aetiology and progression of dental caries, along with the role of fluoride in caries prevention.

Learn the safe application of topical fluoride varnish, including its actions, uses, contraindications, and potential adverse effects, in line with BNF and Summary of Product Characteristics (SPC) guidelines.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will:

Be able to confidently integrate the HNY PGD into their clinical practice.

Have a comprehensive understanding of the safe and effective use of fluoride varnish for the prevention of dental caries in adults and children.

Have a comprehensive understanding of the safe and effective use of fluoride varnish for the prevention of dental caries in children, as part of a structured school-based program.
