Additional information | Giving constructive feedback to a trainee on difficult issues, whether relating to their clinical performance or behaviour, is a challenging part of any Educational Supervisor or Training Programme Director’s role. In some instances, trainees may be resistant to feedback, become defensive, upset or ignore the advice and fail to change their practice. This can have a detrimental impact on patient safety and professional interactions. Therefore, giving and receiving feedback is essential to support relationships with trainees’ for their ongoing growth and development in practice. |

Aims | This in-person, experiential workshop aims to equip you with the relevant knowledge and skills to provide feedback in difficult situations so that the message lands as you intended, and has the greatest chance of having a positive impact to facilitate the desired change in behaviour. |
Objectives | • Reflection on challenges of giving difficult feedback to trainees • Identifying potential underlying factors behind a trainee’s suboptimal response to feedback • Applying coaching concepts and approach to deepen awareness and empathy • Knowledge of what psychological safety is, and its importance in the trainee/trainer relationship, and wider team • Learning principles and techniques of delivering constructive feedback effectively • Opportunity to practice skills in order to gain confidence and insight for future relevant situations |
