DescriptionThis 3 day course is designed to provide the theoretical and practical knowledge for GDC registered Dental Nurses to confidently deliver oral health messages and apply topical fluoride varnish to adults and children on prescription from a Dentist. In addition, the course aims to ensure dental nurses are ready to support patients and the dental team when the New prevention led NHS contract is implemented in 2020. The practical skills for this competency will be achieved through the support, training, advice and observation from a GDC registered Dentist or Hygiene Therapist who will act as the Dental Nurse work-based clinical mentor. To achieve competency delegates will be required to: > Complete 10 work-based reflective logs [confirmed as a safe beginner by an occupationally competent mentor] > Create and evaluate a workplace display > Achieve a satisfactory pass mark in all session assessments Dental Nurse applicants must ensure they have personal, employer or Crown indeminity in place to undertake this course and be up to date with basic life support training. You may be required to produce this evidence upon request. The work-based reflective logbook MUST be completed by the third course session date. Any false declarations of competence and experience will be viewed as very serious and may be referred to the dental regulator.

Attendance at all 3 educational days is mandatory unless prior accreditation has been awarded.

Accreditation of Prior Learning [APL]

Individuals that have achieved competency in either Oral Health Promotion or Topical Fluoride Application within a timeframe of 2 years may be awarded academic credit and will be allowed to reduce the duration of the course. Individuals will be required to provide a copy of their Certificate and details of how the competency is maintained in a clinical setting [e.g. statement from GDC Registrant]. The tutors will consider every APL on an individual basis.

Aims

Aims of the course

Dental nurses provide a key role in oral health education and support prevention in primary care. This course will enable dental nurses to structure oral health sessions and deliver evidence based oral health key messages to patients to improve and promote better oral health.

Additionally, the course will provide the theoretical knowledge and the practical skills to competently apply topical fluoride to children and adult patients on the prescription from a dentist.

> Explain the aetiology of dental caries and describe the mechanisms of fluoride in caries prevention

> Exhibit knowledge and understanding of the process and procedure of topical fluoride application through the work-based reflective logbook

> Demonstrate competence in the procedure of topical fluoride application for adults and children, achieved through direct observation from the work-based mentor
