Aims

To update practitioners in the assessment and considerations for treatment under sedation for patients with a low or high BMI and patients with psychiatric disorders. To increase practitioners knowledge and confidence in assessing and treating these groups of patients under sedation. To increase practitioners confidence in recognising potential airway problems when carrying out a sedation assessment.

Objectives

Objectives of psychiatric disorders session:

- To provide an overview of common mental illnesses

- To increase practitioners awareness of the potential problems of using sedative agents on patients with psychiatric disorders

- To increase knowledge of the medications used to treat mental illnesses

- To highlight potential drug interactions between these medications and sedative agents

- To discuss appropriate aftercare for this patient group

Learning outcomes

Objectives of BMI and airway session:

- To increase practitioners confidence in assessing patients with both high and low BMI

- To increase practitioners knowledge in the physical consequences of high and low BMI and the relevance of these to treatment under sedation

- To refresh practitioners knowledge of airway problems and what makes a difficult airway

- To revise the assessment of a patients airway
