Objectives | Poor oral health is detrimental to overall health, nutrition and hydration, quality of life and comfort, communication and socialisation. Many residents in care homes need help with maintaining their oral health, yet many carers have not received any training in this area. Consequently, mouths are often neglected. To bridge the gap, a training package for care homes in Rotherham called ‘Keeping Care Homes Smiling’ has been developed. An oral health guide for care homes has been compiled, which is a manual covering the basics of how to care for the oral health of residents. This is also presented in the form of an interactive presentation for care home staff, with some hands-on practicals. It aims to empower care home staff to help to improve the oral health of their residents, The Keeping Care Homes Smiling team are looking for 10 enthusiastic FDs who would be able to deliver a training session to a group of care home staff from Rotherham. The FDs will work in pairs to deliver one training session per pair. There will be 5 training sessions in total, held at the Rockingham Professional Development Centre in Rotherham. Prior to delivering the training, the FDs would be required to attend a preparation session led by Steve Thompson (GDP) and Sarah Robertson (Consultant in Dental Public Health, PHE) where the interactive PowerPoint training presentation and oral health guide for care homes will be demonstrated and discussed, so they become familiar with it before they deliver the training to care home staff themselves. |
