DescriptionThis course will be run as a whole day course, with ideally two dental teams or approximately 12 people There would be 3- 4 high fidelity simulation (Sim man 3G) scenarios per day, and practical teaching on airway management, the ABCDE approach and the ILS/ALS protocol.

Aims
  • To provide a safe environment to practice the management of complications and medical emergencies when treating patients under intravenous sedation
Objectives

All members at the end of the session will be able to:

  • Place a supraglottic airway device in the event of airway/breathing compromise in a sedated patient
  • Manage an airway appropriately when a patient’s breathing has been compromised due to over sedation
  • Recognise the signs of oversedation
  • Be able to use the ABCDE approach to assessing the patient
  • Be able to implement the ALS protocol according to the Resuscitation council
  • Appropriately use a defibrillator on a patient in cardiac arrest
  • Know which two rhythms are shockable in cardiac arrest

The sedation clinicians at the end of the session will be able to:

  • Administer flumazenil intravenously if required in an emergency sedation situation
  • Administer adrenaline appropriately in an emergency situation
  • Lead a cardiac and respiratory arrest scenario and know when to appropriately call for help.
