Aims

Overview of treating and managing paediatric patients in the community.

Objectives

- To gain awareness of the importance of behaviour assessment at the new patient appointment

- To appreciate the different forms of pharmacological behaviour management methods available

- To introduce the concept of ‘acclimatisation’ and its place in a treatment plan

- To appreciate the role of different dental care settings (primary, secondary and tertiary) in managing paediatric patients

- To gain awareness of the common developmental and medical conditions of paediatric patients seen in the community dental service

-To understand the impact of these conditions on dental care

-Mechanism of action, indications and technique for the use of Silver Diamine Fluoride

-Management of caries in primary teeth

-Understand the difference between pulpotomy and pulpectomy

Learning outcomes

- Describe the different forms of pharmacological behaviour management

- Incorporate acclimatisation into dental treatment plans where appropriate

- Identify the roles of different dental care settings in managing paediatric patients

- Recognise common developmental and medical conditions of patients seen in the community dental service
