Exploring young people's perspectives of fixed orthodontic treatment (CPD-SHEF23OCT17)

AvailabilityCourse has taken place
SubjectOrthodontics
DescriptionThis talk will describe a longitudinal qualitative research study that was carried out with young people. Participants were recruited before they had their brace fitted so it was possible to explore their motivations and anticipations prior to fixed orthodontic treatment.
Additional information

Data was collected using in-depth qualitative interviews and video diaries. The participants were interviews throughout their orthodontic treatment, with the final interview being after they had had their brace removed. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. The primary motivating factor for young people having a fixed brace was to get straight teeth, although the reasons they wanted straight teeth varied. Young people regarded fixed appliance treatment as a normal stage in growing up and it signified their progression through adolescence. The role of others was significant in young people's experiences of fixed appliances.
