Aims

Implants are increasingly becoming an everyday part of a hygienist and therapists work. Whether you work in a practice that place implants or ‘inherit’ them from elsewhere, this course will equip you with the skills needed to confidently care for implants and the surrounding tissues and put in place the protocols needed for peri-implant assessment and maintenance.

This course will also seek to clarify some of the current thinking and theories relating to the care and maintenance of implants, and attempt to answer the eternal question “Do I probe it?”

Objectives
  • Understand the evolution and concepts of dental implantology
  • Identify the structural components of dental implant systems and the differences in maintenance approach required.
  • Understand the process of osseo-integration, and the differences in periodontal and peri-implant tissue structure
  • Define the baseline information to be recorded on placement
  • Define the radiographic assessment intervals
  • Understand the aetiology of peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis and the different treatment protocols needed for each
  • Consider the risk factors and complications of implant placement and maintenance in the longer term
  • Gain hands on experience of instrument selection, probing and debridement techniques
  • Understand the need for controlled polishing of implant collar and restorations
  • Utilise and demonstrate oral health aids and adjuncts for patients home care programme, and give effective preventive care advice.
  • Understand the use of professional care materials and adjuncts for in surgery use
