Aims

Aims of the session:

This short evening course is designed for dental nurses who will be working with a foundation dentist during their first year in general practice.

It introduces the expectations of the dentist and considers the abilities, skills and challenges facing the new dental team.

The overall aim is to provide the dental nurse with clear information and awareness of their role in supporting the new foundation dentist and the whole dental team.

Objectives

By the end of the session dental nurses will be able to:

· Recognise the challenges facing the foundation dentist.

· Identify the benefits of personal experience to enhance support.

· Explain the roles and boundaries of individuals within the dental team.

· Demonstrate effective use of a range of communication skills.

· Evaluate and support the progress and development of Dental Foundation Training using appropriate feedback strategies.

· Recognise signs for struggling foundation dentists and effectively gain support for their development where necessary.
