Aims

To provide an overview of behaviour management techniques including cognitive behavioural therapy and behaviour change conversations to enable effective dental care in anxious children and young people.

Objectives
  • Understand how you can use behaviour change models to assess patient motivation and readiness to change
  • To learn how cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) fits in with other techniques for managing dental anxiety
  • Introduce strategies to reduce anxiety in children who need dental care including non pharmacological behaviour management techniques
Learning outcomes
  • Have a confident and structured approach to having a behaviour change conversation with parents
  • To be familiar with the Sheffield CBT resource “Your Teeth You Are in Control, and feel confident using this with patients
  • Be aware of resources to help reduce anxiety and the importance of bitewing radiographs in the diagnosis of caries and techniques to enable these to be completed in anxious children
