Steve, the course speaker, is on the autistic spectrum and high functioning so can offer an interesting first person perspective into some of the areas that are little talked about in mainstream society.

Aims
  • Recognise the early signs of anxiety and reactions of the individual with Autism / Sensory Integration Dysfunction (SID).
  • Factors that escalate hostility and aggression.
  • Actions to avoid when confronted with a distressed person with Autism / SID.
  • Implementing coping strategies to manage a variety of settings including the workplace.
  • Behaviour happens for a reason/disability not disobedience.
  • To understand how SID can affect learning and behaviour.
Objectives
  • To increase staff confidence/knowledge of Autism and Sensory Integration Dysfunction (SID).
  • To provide staff with a greater understanding into the common problematic areas of individuals with Autism and SID.
  • To demonstrate to staff the importance of how their own behaviours can affect people with Autism and SID.
  • To provide staff with skills to better understand the perspective of the individual with Autism or SID.
