Aims

To discuss the contemporary use of dental implants in Restorative Dentistry.

Objectives

After the presentation, delegates should:

  • Understand how a patient is prosthetically worked up and planned for dental implants.
  • Understand the different types of surgical/radiographic guides that are available for clinicians.
  • Understand the basic principles of dental implant surgery and recognise when it may be necessary to employ bone grafting techniques to optimise the patient’s bone volume.
  • Understand when a fixed implant retained bridge or an implant retained denture may be indicated for a patient.
  • Understand how different types of impression techniques may have to be used to fabricate an implant retained superstructure.
  • Understand the clinical stages involved in the construction of a fixed implant retained superstructure.
  • Appreciate maintenance issues relating to implant supported superstructures.
