Aims

1. To prepare the Dental Core Trainee for their first week in a hospital OMFS post

2. To introduce the role of the Dental Core Trainee in the hospital OMFS team and the care of patients undergoing in-patient oral and maxillofacial surgery.

3. To highlight key skills which the trainee will be expected to acquire early on in their DCT year.

Objectives

Be aware of the stucture of the hospital OMFS team and their role within it.

Have been introduced to the principal processes of in-patient care

Be aware of the learning opportunities which are available in the Hospital, and how these might be of benefit to the trainee following completion of DCT

Learning outcomes

Describe the role of the DCT in OMFS

Understand the responsibilities of the DCT in assessing common maxillofacial emergencies

Understand the principles of the coordination and organization of in-patient management for maxillofacial surgery patients.

Understand the core manual skills that need to be developed early in the DCT post.
