DescriptionA two day course, offering opportunity for small group role play practise of communication skills with 2 facilitators, and 6 scenarios plus space to create further role plays tailored specifically to participant needs. Access to presentation and supplementary information on a range of communication skills areas.

Course preparation

Before the course, please read the resources attached (above). The handouts contain important background information to help prepare you for the course. As the handouts may not be covered directly in the course, you may find it helpful to review them before the course.

Participants are asked to join using a computer or tablet rather than a phone as this will enable them to get more out of the course.

Multiday courses

This is a multiday course. The attendance requirements for multiday courses are:

  • You must secure rota coordinator agreement for the time off for all course days before booking and follow the study leave process
  • Attendance at all sessions is required in order to complete the course and be awarded a participation certificate
  • If your availability changes before the course and you know that you will be unable to attend one or more sessions, you must cancel your place as soon as possible
  • If you are absent from day 1 of the course, you will be withdrawn from the remainder of the course

Booking cancellation

Delegates must make every effort to attend courses they have booked. If your availability changes after booking, please cancel your place through Maxcourse as soon as possible. This will release the place for colleagues on the waiting list.

Aims

To explore ways of handling difficult areas of communication that may occur with patients, relatives and colleagues.

There will be an opportunity to practice, in a safe environment, a variety of approaches to tackle this.

The learning will be problem based and experiential

Objectives
  • To practice and reflect on communication challenges in a range of areas
  • To develop confidence in dealing with challenging situations
  • To develop skills in reading cues from others and responding to them effectively
Learning outcomes
  • Have built on, enhanced and reinforced their interpersonal skills and be able to communicate more effectively.
  • Be more confident and assertive in dealing with difficult and sensitive situations.
  • Be able to introduce a more sensitive use of language in their consulting and other aspects of communication.
  • Recognise the impact and effect of poor communication and the need to enhance personal risk management.
  • Understand the value of reflection and use this in their practice
