SubjectEducator and Supervisor Development
DescriptionSelf-critical thinking is common in medical training and can significantly impact confidence, learning and wellbeing. This interactive session explores the concept of the inner critic and how it may present in doctors in training. Participants will develop strategies to recognise and respond to self-critical patterns, supporting more balanced and effective working.
Additional information

This session explores the “inner critic” and how self-critical thinking can develop within the context of medical training and high-performance environments. We will consider how the inner critic can influence confidence, engagement with feedback, performance and progression.

The session will focus on how educators can recognise and respond to self-critical patterns, including how feedback, supervision and workplace culture may reinforce or reduce these patterns. Practical strategies will be shared to support more balanced internal dialogue and psychologically safe learning environments.

The session is interactive and reflective in style, using a combination of brief teaching, guided reflection and discussion. It is suitable for all educators, including those supporting doctors in training and those who identify as neurodivergent themselves.
