DescriptionIncrease your understanding of and confidence in supporting postgraduate doctors or dentists in training with a visual or hearing impairment. The course is part of a series of Understanding Disability workshops for Faculty, Educational/Clinical Supervisors and Medical Education Teams. We recommend attending the Introduction to Disability Awareness Course first. Course topics include: - The language used around Disabilities - Exploring visual impairments, with a focus on: Complete or Partial Blindness Low Vision Glaucoma Cataracts Macular Degeneration Nystagmus - Exploring hearing impairments, with a focus on: Complete Deafness Partial Hearing Loss (Hard of Hearing) Tinnitus Conductive Hearing Loss Auditory Processing Disorder Meniere’s Disease - How somebody with an impairment be affected during their training and in the clinical workplace - The Equality Act - An exploration of reasonable adjustments - How to support a trainee or colleague with a visual or hearing impairment

Aims

The aim is to provide you with knowledge of visual and hearing impairments to support postgraduate doctors or dentists through their training programme and in the clinical environment.

Objectives

The objectives for this course are:

• To understand what a disability is and how this might affect someone working in a clinical environment.

• To understand what a visual impairment is, including looking at glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration.

• To understand what a hearing impairment is, including looking at complete deafness, hard of hearing and tinnitus.

• To provide an overview of how this may affect someone in studying or working environments.

• To recognise what adjustments are available.

• To obtain the knowledge to support postgraduate doctors or dentists through their training programme and in the clinical environment.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, you will:

• Have an overview of what a hearing and visual impairment are and how this may affect someone studying or working.

• Be able to effectively support postgraduate doctors or dentists through their training programme and in the clinical environment.

• Have an awareness of appropriate adjustments for colleagues or students with a disability.
