Description | This awayday is aimed at improving the resources for, and experience of, trainees returning to clinical work after a period of time out for non-clinical work/study such as a higher degree or fellowship. The morning session will allow us to understand some of the barriers to a smooth transition, with input from current students, recently returned trainees, academic and educational supervisors/ TPDs. This will be very valuable in designing and implementing changes to improve the return to training for academics, and will focus on the different needs of this group compared with those who have taken time out for other reasons, such as parental leave. The afternoon session is a chance to provide some support to trainees and students immediately. This workshop will be led by Adrian Wallwork, an author of over 30 published books on writing for publication and presentations. Adrian is particularly interested in improving English writing and presenting styles for an international audience, given that the majority of the world's population are not native English speakers. To get the most out of this workshop, attendees are asked to provide an abstract and presentation that they have previously submitted/ given. For those who wish to attend the afternoon session, please see the attached document for pre-course work.

Aims | The aim of the morning session is to discuss perceived or experienced barriers to the transition between academic (or non-clinical) working time and clinical training, and explore ideas of improving the process. We hope to take a project forward based on the information and ideas at this session and implement it locally, in addition to researching the experiences of previously returned trainees. We hope to gain the points of view of as many as possible of those involved in the process- i.e. from current students, trainees who have recently returned to clinical practice (in the last 3 years) and both academic and clinical supervisors. This will help us to develop a much broader understanding of the issues faced, and therefore improve the chances of implementing a successful programme to improve the experience for future returners.
The afternoon workshop covers academic writing and presentation skills. In the writing part, you will learn simple strategies to help you ensure that your papers, reports, emails etc can be read and understood rapidly by editors, reviewers and fellow academics of all nationalities. In the presentations part, you will quickly learn how to attract and maintain an audience's attention at an international conference - not only through your slides but above all by how you speak, the types of words you use, and how you relate to the audience.
